What a strange video. He’s right, of course. But it’s certainly odd to see him admit it so frankly. Especially now that the dreaded Eagleton meme raised against McCain/Palin is now bouncing back at Obama/Biden.
Biden: Hey, you know who might have been a better pick for VP than me?
Judging by this sympathic view Biden was trying to defend Hillary’s qualifications after an audience member disparaged her. That’s not surprising to me; for all his political faults (lots!) Biden has a reputation for being a loyal colleague and a stand-up guy at heart. Lots of people in Delaware certainly like him, and by all accounts he likes them too.
However, Biden also has a deserved reputation for saying dumb things and just plain talking too much, and I think that this latest statement revealed more than he intended to say.
I honestly don’t think Biden wants to be VP, at least not with Obama. I suspect he took Obama’s offer because it’s the closest thing to President he’ll ever be. And, maybe, and out of a sense of obligation and party loyalty. (It’s interesting that Biden is simultaneously running for his DE Senate seat at the same time as he’s running for VP, and he’s unlikely to lose that seat no matter what happens.)
Anyway, I don’t think Obama will replace Biden. It’s too late for that. And I don’t think Hillary would accept being sloppy seconds anyway, not when she has a Senate career ahead and a possibility of another run at President. Obama’s made his bed and he has to lie in it.
As a McCain/Palin supporter I won’t be at all sorry to see Obama lose and Biden end up back in his comfy Senate seat, riding that daily Amtrak commute. And, you know, I think Joe will be just fine with that.
