And herein lies the problem. The war on terror, Islamofacism, Communism, Drugs . . . insert faceless concept here.

War on Iraq . . . unjustified but fine. War on Al Qaeda . . . ok. War on a concept for which there is no measuring stick to accurately gauge success . . . big problem. And hence the notion of perpetual war that we're facing now. You can't defeat an idea. You can't destroy the notion of blowing up a building. You can't conquer it, you can't defeat it. You can't through military offensive, ie war, prevent someone from committing an act of terror. Especially if we want to build a free society in the places we're in now. A free society makes the dangerous assumption that its citizens know how to behave. Prior experience tells us they don't, and probably never will (not just in the Middle East, everywhere). If you want to live in a free society, you run the inherent risk that someone is going to want to or try to engage in a terrorist act.

All that aside, we've been a perpetual state of war against a concept for the better part of a century. A foe that is nameless. Something that we're collectively afraid of but not able to pin point. First it was communism, then it was drugs, now terror. Each becomes harder to put a face to than the previous.

Rusty at the Jawa report is correct on the dual war analysis. There are two distinct conflicts. However the notion of a "war on terror" is a gross oversimplification, rather a soundbyte that's been used to keep us just scared enough such that we go along with our current military actions. Fight Al Qaeda, Muqtada al Sadr, Hezbollah, whoever. Narrow the target so that if/when such an enemy is defeated we can actually declare that something was accomplished.

I know it sounds like lowering the standard, but it's really just making realistic goals. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE TERRORISTS. They just might not be Shiites or Sunnis.

Don't know about that second link about the "self defeating speech", especially since it was all things she "said jokingly". Given the grammar and misspellings in that article I'm less than inclined to think that its totally valid.

Yeah that's stupid, and fishy. While I might question the resale of student notes (I'd give them away for free), any sort of notes taken on a lecture should be public domain, or at the very least the copyright holder would be the student who actually penned them.

I think this is especially funny in the light of universities who are now publishing entire courses online free of charge.

The history channel did a few shows going over the history of specific drugs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lrd5xtyfjFw
That one on cocaine and crack.

It also seems that the Feds have actually grown the mary jane for medical use since 1978.
