This discussion thread started out about the Most Ill-Conceived Vehicle Ever but quickly turned into "the ugliest vehicles ever". And man, are some of them uuuugly. I think the front runners so far are the freakish Aurora Safety Car from 1957 (who’s loving owner still thinks it’s hideous) and the Zimmer, which is a custom made $120,000 vehicle made from a Lincoln Town Car with a pseudo-Packard front end. As Carpundit says, it’s the silliest car ever.
But I must come to the defense of a couple cars in that discussion.
- The Chevy Corvair was designed to be sleek and eye-catching in order to emphasize its unique (for Chevy) rear-engine design. That’s why there’s no grille in front. It’s different, but I don’t think it’s ugly. Especially compared to some other mainstream the cars of the time.
- The Kubelwagen/VW Thing was a German millitary vehicle later adapted for the civilian market. Under the skin it’s a cousin of the original Beetle. Yes, it is ugly, but it’s a sort of utilitarian "it works so we don’t care" sort of ugliness, not a designed ugliness that someone spent a lot of money on. Besides, someone my dad worked with had a Thing when I was little, and I think they’re cool. So there.
