Here’s a nice story about a lost camera full of photos, and an honest couple who did some clever and persistent detective work to discover the owner and send it back home.

At dusk on New Year’s Eve, Erika Gunderson got into a taxi in New York City and entered a digital-age mystery. Sitting on the back seat was a nice Canon digital camera. Gunderson asked the driver which previous passenger might have left it, but the cabbie didn’t seem to care. So Gunderson brought it home and showed it to her fiance, Brian Ascher. They decided that the only right thing to do was to find the owner.

Scenes from our childhood

That’s my sister Rebecca, probably around 1978 or so. This was taken by my father at Mom Mom & Pop Pop’s house.

My father left behind thousands of photos. Slides, mostly, but also a fair number of B&W and color negatives. This strip of negatives was probably one he developed himself in the darkroom he set up in our basement. I found them in the bottom of a box of miscellaneous equipment, and not put away in sleeves like most of his other negatives. It was probably set aside in favor of some other alternate shots on the same roll of film.

O’Brien Is Tryin’ to Learn to Talk Hawaiian

A pre-WWI ditty. Click here for a nice performance of this tune by YouTube mystery man FretKillr.

O’Brien is tryin to learn to talk Hawai’ian
To his Honolulu Lou
He’s sighin and cryin
And all the time he’s tryin
Just to say “I love you true”

With his “Ar-rah Ya-ka Hu-la
Be-gor-ra Hick-i Du-lah”
And his Irish “Ji-ji-boo.”

Sure, O’Brien is tryin to learn to talk Hawai’ian
To his Honolulu Lou
He’s sighin and lyin in Irish and Hawai’ian
To his wife and Lulu, too.
While he writes a lot of Blarney
To Katie in Kilarney
And she thinks that he is true.

Sure, O’Brien is tryin to learn to talk Hawai’ian
To his Honolulu Lou
He’s sighin and cryin and all the time he’s tryin
Just to say “I love you true.”
He won Bridget, Kate and Mary
By singin “Tip-per-ar-y”
And he’ll win his Lulu, too.

That’s the problem with airports these days, as this article shows pretty clearly with some frightening real world examples:

Get the Flick: Air Traffic Safety vs. Capacity

We don’t fly much (my very first flight was only a few years ago) so this is all fairly academic to me. But the basic problems of efficiency and capacity are the same in any complex system, whether it’s a computer network, a database, or an airport. In this case, airports have gotten busier and busier. Expanding airports is expensive and politically difficult, and sometimes geographically impossible. Building new airports is even worse. So existing airports are used at overcapacity in order to compensate. It’s amazing that the system works as well as it does, honestly.
