I’m not generally in favor of drug legalization or decriminalization. Drug manufacturing, distribution, and dealing  are serious crimes and should be punished harshly. Possession and drug use are often punished too harshly. Putting those people in jail for years or decades and giving them a permanent criminal record doesn’t help them, stop drugs, or serve society. That’s why this article is hard to disagree with:

If asked to serve on a jury deliberating a violation of state or federal drug laws, we will vote to acquit, regardless of the evidence presented. Save for a prosecution in which acts of violence or intended violence are alleged, we will — to borrow Justice Harry Blackmun’s manifesto against the death penalty — no longer tinker with the machinery of the drug war. No longer can we collaborate with a government that uses nonviolent drug offenses to fill prisons with its poorest, most damaged and most desperate citizens.

Jury nullification is American dissent, as old and as heralded as the 1735 trial of John Peter Zenger, who was acquitted of seditious libel against the royal governor of New York, and absent a government capable of repairing injustices, it is legitimate protest.

Notably, this may be the first time many people have ever heard of jury nullifcation. Even though it’s been a part of the legal system for a very, very long time.

Retro poster goodness

I’m a sucker for vintage style posters, and this one nails the style perfectly.

The red part is slightly too busy for my tastes, though true to the period feel. Overall I like it. Very striking.

It’s just like this chilling documentary warned us would happen, more than thirty years ago. Why didn’t we listen? WHY!?!

Ten Times as Big as a Man!

Wow, Stephen Green is right. If the new King Kong movie is half as good as this new trailer then it’ll be awesome.

All of the recent videos on apple’s site require the Quicktime 7 be installed, which the web site doesn’t bother to mention for some reason.

BTW, the tite of this post comes from a cheesy Kong cartoon that I enjoyed when I was a kid. In an AMAZING coincidence (ha) the completely unrelated cartoon will be released on DVD at the same time as the new movie.

Tales from the Superdome

A very interesting personal account of what it was like inside the Superdome, from the perspective of a couple from New Zealand who found themselves abruptly changed from tourists to refugess.

The bullet points at the end ask some interesting questions.

Don’t Panic!

Amazon’s home page is featuring the trailer for the upcoming The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie. Yay!

As expected the folks at Slashdot have a lively discussion going on.

The HHGTTG has seen many variations as it’s gone from a radio series to novels to TV and back again. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of old and new ideas in the new movie too.  This very interesting self-interview with the screenwriter reassures me that the work is being done by someone who appreciates the material.
